Amber Flashlight: The Sleep-Friendly Night Light You Need

I wanted a dim flashlight.

My little one was sick one night with a fever and cough. I wanted to sit next to her while she slept just for my peace of mind and to make sure her fever came down. However, I didn't want to disturb her sleep with a bright light that could wake her when she coughed. All of the existing lights in the room were too bright. I found myself just wanting a small dim flashlight that allowed me to read next to her while not waking her.

Amber flashlight lasts 12 hours on your phone.

Most flashlights compete on brightness, using LED lights for energy efficiency. However, LED lights typically skew to white or blue lights. I couldn't find my camping headlamp that had a red light. I wanted to go to bed eventually too, so I really didn't want to use my phone's bright flashlight mode. There was just no good option. I ended up using my phone's screen for a while. That got me thinking. Wouldn't it be great to have an amber-colored flashlight on my phone instead? A phone screen isn't too bright, and, by controlling the color, we can skew away from brain-activating blue light. That's how we came up with our amber flashlight YouTube video. It's simply 12 hours of amber light.

It's also a great night light.

There's nothing fancy about the Amber Flashlight video. We deliberately did not incorporate sound, movement, or intervening ads. Once you set it up, it will provide 12 hours of amber light. Because it's so simple, the video file itself wasn't very big. That means connecting all night to YouTube wouldn't use much bandwidth either. Without sound, there is less energy use than normal videos as well. Because it's a video, it keeps playing without timing out like an image on your phone. It would be quite simple to just plug in your phone, set the video, and use it as a night light, every night.

Why use an amber light?

You might be wondering why I chose amber light specifically. Well, there's science behind it! Blue light, which is emitted from most electronic devices, suppresses melatonin production – the hormone that regulates our sleep-wake cycle. This can make it harder to fall asleep and lead to poorer sleep quality. Amber light, on the other hand, has a longer wavelength and doesn't interfere with melatonin production as much. It's gentler on the eyes and promotes relaxation, making it ideal for nighttime use.

This flashlight is sleep-friendly.

While the amber flashlight was developed for reading in bed, we've found many more uses for it. It creates a soothing ambience in the bedroom for those who like a small night light. Its gentle glow is great to light a trip to the bathroom in the middle of the night too. If you journal before sleep, it's the ideal amount of light to let you transfer nagging thoughts from your head to a piece of paper. If you are a stargazer using an old-fashioned star chart, you also know the challenge of letting your eyes adjust to the dark while being able to still see a star chart.
