Do you need headphones for binaural beats?

I often receive this question from people interested in fully experiencing binaural beats. I always tell them yes, you definitely need headphones though the specific type you use matters more than you might think.

This is because binaural beats rely on a process called frequency following response. This means your brain hears two slightly different frequencies played separately in each ear, but processes a third, "phantom" tone. If those two tones are played through something like a home audio system, they will mix in the air before reaching your eardrums and the binaural effect will not happen.

For the binaural effect to happen, you need stereo separation. Most folks will grab a standard pair of over-the-ear headphones or earbuds and think they're all set, but if you use these for sleep or meditation, you'll be lying down. If you're a side sleeper, both over-the-ear headphones and earbuds are incredibly uncomfortable. They can be cumbersome, sweat inducing, and press into your ears causing physical irritation. That pain is a surefire way to yank you out of the relaxed state you're trying to reach.

That's why we intentionally designed SleepPhones® headphones as a headband. We use ultra-thin, padded speakers that sit flat against your head, so nothing pokes your ears. These speakers, however, provide the stereo separation necessary for the binaural effect to work. The headband is also soft and comfortable to wear, so you get the science of the audio without the physical discomfort of traditional headphones or earbuds. If you want to use binaural beats for sleep or focus, the comfort of your gear is just as important as the audio itself. With SleepPhones® headphones, you can slip into a sensory cocoon and drift away with relaxing binaural beats.
