Can you wear headphones while sleeping?
So you're wondering about sleeping with headphones to help block out a snoring partner, city noise, or even to ease anxiety before bed? Trust us, you're not the only one. That is a question we surprisingly get asked a lot and the answer really depends on how you're doing it.
Most people default to standard earbuds, but they aren't intended for long-term use. They can trap moisture and potentially lead to earwax buildup or even infections. Plus having something jammed into your ear all night isn't comfortable for most people. Another option is over the ear headphones, but those certainly are not designed for sleeping, especially if you're a side sleeper. I have spoken with customers who have used both options, and their biggest complaint is the discomfort they experience with either type of headphone.
Another factor to consider when using headphones for sleeping is the volume. Prolonged exposure to loud sounds, even while sleeping, can absolutely damage your hearing. It's easy to lose track when you're drifting off, but you don't want to wake up with ringing in your ears, or worse, long term hearing loss. We suggest keeping the volume at 70 decibels or less.
If you really want to sleep with headphones, you have to consider the design. That's where our SleepPhones® headphones come in. They consist of a soft, comfortable headband with thin, adjustable padded speakers built right in. We specifically engineered them with safety in mind, focusing on comfort and lower volumes. As the speakers gently rest on top of your ears, nothing is being jammed into them. This makes them perfect for side sleepers.
People use them to mask outside noise, play calming sounds, or even listen to guided meditations. Honestly, it's about creating a relaxing bedtime routine that works for you. But rest assured, you'll protect your ears and hearing while you rest.
