AcousticSheep LLC CEO offers ideas on running a green company
Wind power and recycled materials are just two ways a company can be green on Earth Day and everyday, according to Dr. Wei-Shin Lai, MD, founder and CEO of AcousticSheep, LLC, makers of drug-free sleep aid SleepPhones®, and RunPhones®, a combination headband/headphones that enables safe, more comfortable exercise to music.
SleepPhones feature thin speakers inside a fleece headband that offer a way to fall asleep to music that is more comfortable than earbuds. The fleece is made by Polartec® from 88 percent recycled bottles, then shipped to AcousticSheep’s Pennsylvania headquarters to make SleepPhones and RunPhones. “A big reason we chose Polartec was due to the recycled materials, and often it seems the best vendors are environmentally conscious,” Dr. Lai said.
Recycling and streamlining to avoid waste is a regular practice at AcousticSheep headquarters, Dr. Lai said. She noted there are small things a company can do that add up, like recycling toner cartridges, creating more efficient, resource-saving workflows, using smart strips so all unused computer equipment automatically turns off, etc. “Not only are you benefitting the environment, you’re saving on operating costs,” Dr. Lai said. “Green is smart business.”
AcousticSheep LLC is powered by 100 percent wind energy as well, Dr. Lai said. “If you have a choice for an electric vendor, that’s another way to go if you want to be a green company,” she said.
Along with saving the environment and money, Dr. Lai said there is a demand for environmentally friendly merchandise. “Our customers appreciate that they are buying a green product,” she said.
